23 Golfers at -4 Or Better

What's even more impressive, is that there are a host of golfers that are just off the lead, in fact, as of the time of writing, there are 23 golfers that are at -4 or better. In the first round. Not too bad, not too bad at all. As mentioned, Tiger Woods has yet to tee off, but that hasn't stopped current leader Steve Lowery from hitting the course running. He started off the day on the back nine, and his round at one point included four-straight birdies. Considering he hit all but three greens in regulation and only missed three fairways, I'd say it's safe to assume that, and his proximity to the hole on his approach shots, helped set up his impressive 63 today.

Where is Vijay?

PGATour mentioned something interesting, that needed answering, and thankfully was. We know Tiger's won this event twice and been 2nd twice, we know Jim Furyk has won here and played well every other time, and we know that they are both here, accounted for and playing, but meanwhile, Vijay Singh is not. Vijay has won this event three times, and yet is nowhere to be found.

FedEx Defense For Vijay

According to reports, however, Vijay is preparing for six tournaments he's signed on for in both August and September and four of them are Playoff events. Translation: Vijay wants to be fresh to try to defend his FedEx Cup Title. Simple enough, right?

Tune In!

Nevertheless, tune in today because Tiger is gearing up to tee off, and that's when things should get really interesting. Can Lowery's lead hold out? Will Tiger play like Old Tiger, or British Open Tiger? It's getting good.

Dicky Pride Shoots First Round 66

Kicking things off with an absolute bang is a guy that has had arguably the toughest run on the PGA Tour we can think of. His run with the PGA Tour has already included losing his TOUR card, multiple injuries and never seeming to play up to the potential he knew he had in him. Could this first round at the John Deere Classic be the turnaround point for all that? I guess we'll see, but his 66 has him locked into second place right now, with the current leader still facing 3 holes until he can rest comfortably in the locker room.

Duval's Woe's Continue

Another golfer that all eyes had been firmly locked-in on, was David Duval. After his extremely impressive play at the U.S. Open, rumblings started to spread that maybe, just maybe, the David Duval we all used to know and love was back and his caliber of play would do nothing but get better, and better. Unfortunately for all you Duval fans, he's struggling yet again and is currently on the 17th hole sitting on a disappointing 4-over-par. Yikes.

Kenny Perry Waits to Defend

We're still waiting on ol' Kenny Perry to hit the links and try to defend his title here. Will it happen, or will the wave of excitement he's been riding on fizzle out into whitewash? Not sure yet, but if you're not tuning in, you're missing out!

What IS it these past two weeks with the PGA Tour and the absolute destruction of course and tournament records?! First we see Kenny Perry set a brand new Travelers Championship record by shooting a 4-round 258, and now, only one full day into the AT&T National Tourney at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, the course record has been bested by a stroke and the tournament record by a full three strokes by young Anthony Kim. Impressive?! We certainly are inclined to say so.

Kim Sets Records

That's right, Anthony Kim blasted his way through his first round today to set a brand new tournament record. Previously, the tournament record at the AT&T National had stood at 65, and with Kim's 62 he took care of it quite handily. Also, the record at Congressional had previously stood at 63, which was an honor shared by Tom Pernice Jr. and Peter Londard...Kim took care of that as well, and what's more exciting, set a brand new career record for himself, as his previous career best round was a 63, which he notched in the first round of the 2007 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Can Kim Defend?

I suppose the fact that he's the defending champion here at this tournament is adding a bit of fuel to his competitive fire. Here's what Kim had to say following his record breaking round:

"I love coming back to this course...I have a lot of good feelings here. the course fits my eye....I am getting to the point where I feel like I can win anytime I tee it up."

He must love the course, considering the fact that he hit "71 percent of his fairways, 71.4 percent of his greens in regulation and had a putting average of just over 1.5 putts per hole." Despite the fact that Kim set records and is playing out of his head right now, he still only has a slim two-stroke lead and there are golfers on the course with half their round left to play that are only three strokes off. Can he hold onto the Round 1 lead? Time will tell.

It's Heating Up...Tune In!

Tune in!

Co-Leaders in at -7

As of right now, the leaders for the day is sitting in the clubhouse at an incredidbly impressive seven-under-par. The leaders, Paul Goydos and Charles Warren, posted opening round 63's to blast the Travelers Championship course at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut and by the looks of things, there are some golfers that haven't even made the turn that are posting scores that are shockingly low.

Boo Weekley: -6 through 6 Holes

One of those golfers, Boo Weekley, is just now passing through his 6th hole of the day and is already -6. Yes, you heard right, he's birdied the first six holes he has faced and is only a stroke off the lead with twelve holes left to play in his opening round. Can you say Wow? Considering the fact that Weekley has played very little golf since his shoulder injury at The Players Championship back in May, this round is even more impressive. He's on pace right now to beat the current single round course record which sits at a 61 and is shared by 4 other golfers.

Warren Believes 59 Will Be Shot

Even Charles Warren, co-leader at the moment, believes that this record will be beat. He was quoted earlier as saying that he'd not be at all surprised if someone shot a 59 this week given the courses current conditions: soft greens, great weather and slower rolling greens. Will a 59 be posted? Will someone go even lower? If Boo Weekley keeps it up, it might just be him!

Tune in!

Tune in, we've said it 100 times but we'll say it again: It's getting good!

Round 1 Has Leaders at -1

That said, what did we miss? Round 1 did get off to a bit of a start before the great flood began, how did people play? Looks like there have been some ups and some downs already at Bethpage Black, considering that play has been suspended since 10:15 Eastern Time. Currently there are a few golfers sitting in the lead at an early -1, included are Jeff Brehaut, Johan Edfors, Andrew Parr and Ryan Spears. While no one has finished their round, and Brehaut is only through 11 holes, -1 is still the score to beat.

Where's Tiger?

Tiger Woods, on the other hand, was through 6 holes when the horn sounded and is currently sitting at 1-over-par. Considering how the weather is looking, I doubt we'll be seeing him try to lower that score anytime soon. Despite the fact that the rain seems to let up at times, right when it does another downpour occurs and even if it stopped completely, it'd take the USGA quite some time to actually get the course back in playing condition. Reports are in that some of the greens are completely underwater and some fairways appear to have "rivers running through them." Yikes.

Play Will Most Likely Be Cancelled

Bottom line, play will most likely be cancelled for the day, which is an extreme bummer for all of us golf fans, but it could make things extremely interesting when play finally does resume. What will this do to scores? Time will tell, but we can't wait to find out!

Phil Ready for Round 2

Currently on the course with an extremely impressive, and most likely emotional 2-under-par, Phil is back on the course and ready to ramp things up for Round 2. I can't imagine what he's going through playing right now, but I am sure the emotion of the gallery is nothing compared to his own internal emotions. Unfortunately for Phil, however, his emotional -2 is nowhere close to the play that Brian Gay has put up in Round 1, and again today in Round 2.

Brian Gay Shoots 64, 66

After kicking things off in Round 1 with a blistering 64, Brian Gay stepped onto the golf course on an absolute mission today, and followed up his first round 64, with a second round 66, securing himself into the lead with a two round total of -10. Wow. No matter how good he plays, however, I think all eyes will be on Phil Mickelson and also returning to the fray, John Daly.

Daly Evens it Up

Daly, who has been off the PGA Tour for quite some time, showed up yesterday and shot a disapointing 72, but today looked to rebound from that and brought him back to Even par after shooting a much more impressive, and much more welcome -2 today. Still, we're all watching Phil and hoping he plays as well as we all want him to play. Can he build on his impressive first round -2? We'll see, and we'll be cheering the whole way.

If you're not extremely excited about watching the golf that's going to be taking place this weekend at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, let's face it, something is most likely wrong with you. We're once again going to be missing two of the biggest names in golf, as both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are going to be absent, both for their own reasons, but nevertheless, there are a lot of great golfers lined up to battle it out over the next 4 days.

Round 1 Kicks Off

That battle, as it were, has already begun and there is already some impressive and exciting golf being played. Considering the fact that the winner of this tournament takes home an impressive $1.1 million dollars as well as 500 Fed Ex Cup points, there is a lot on the line for a lot of these golfers. Currently, at time of writing, there's a 7 way tie atop the leaderboard at -2. Impressive considering they're only on the 4th hole of the entire 18.

Phil Will Be Missed

To say Phil's absence at this tournament is being felt is a drastic understatement. Last year, his dramatic finale at the Colonial marked one of the most exciting and inspiring finishes of the entire year on the PGA Tour. Not having him around to defend that title is upsetting and unfortunate. As the article we just read mentioned, there is still a lot of great talent to be found, as this year the tournament will feature:

"...eight former champions, 17 major championship winners and 11 winners from 2009, including multiple winner and current FedExCup points leader Zach Johnson."

Don't Even Blink

Bottom line: Keep your eyes glued to the television this whole weekend as this tournament has taught us to never even think about blinking. Right when you think you know how things are going to turn out, everything can change.
