It just wouldn't be the summer of 2009 if weather didn't play a factor in some way, shape or form.  We avoided weather delays and round suspensions the last two tournaments, and apparently Mother Nature wasn't too happy about being excluded, because she decided to rear her ugly pretty head again at the Wyndham Championship taking place in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Rain Suspends Play, Scores Stay Low

While the rain has completely suspended play, the one thing it hasn't been able to conquer were people's low scores before play was called off.  While only a few people are actually done with their rounds and dry in the clubhouse, the leaders, Chez Reavie and Brandt Snedeker are currently tied at -6 with more golf left to play once Mother Nature sees fit to let them do so.  Could the rain be making scores After the play is resumed even lower?  Things could slow down substantially on the greens and shots that look close might actually stay close.  Then again, they could be so slow that putting is hard to read.  I guess we'll see when and if the weather sees fit.

Daly Playing Great Golf...Finally

One player, who we actually just talked about today, that is shocking just about everyone that saw that he was entered in the tournament, is our good friend John Daly.  While his first round play at Hazeltine led directly to his withdrawl from the tournament, it looks like things might just be turning around as he's playing the best golf he's played in weeks and months.  So far he's through the 14th hole and is only 2 strokes off the lead at -4.  Whether or not he can keep it up, and whether or not his pre-existing injury will affect the remainder of his round I guess we'll have to wait and see, but as mentioned, we can't witness that until the rain stops.

Fingers Crossed We'll See A Round 1 Finish Today

Keep your fingers crossed things clear up because play is getting better by the hour.  Tune in, as always, it's getting great.

Looks like 2009 is officially the season of a rain-delayed golf tournament.  First we had the excruciatingly long U.S. Open, and now, once again, rain is officially ruining our parade.  That's right, the John Deere Classic is at a standstill and according to the most recent reports, play should be resuming sometime around 4:00 pm local time.

Stiles & Janzen Tied for Lead

So when play DOES resume, what does the landscape of the leaderboard look like?  Glad you asked.  Right now sitting proudly atop the leaderboard we see a two-way tie for the lead at -7 between Darron Stiles and Lee Janzen and three other golfers nipping at their heels at -6.  How will the rain affect play, affect scores and affect the leaderboard?  We can't tell yet, but things could get extremely interesting over the next few hours.  Whether or not they'll fully finish Round 2 remains to be seen, but taking a quick glance at the weather video on PGATour.com, it's looking like they might be facing some serious Mother Nature issues.

Monday Finish Possible

When PGA Tournament Arvin Ginn was asked whether or not this tournament could be cut short due to the impending British Open, that quite obviously would take priority, Ginn visibly takes offense to it and reminds the interviewer that they are focused on the John Deere Classic, and nothing else.  He also mentioned that a Monday finish  might once again be required.  Yikes.

Perry & Glover Off The Pace

As long as there is golf, we'll be watching!  We're Still waiting on Kenny Perry and Lucas Glover to both make their moves, considering they are riding the wave of recent victories.  Currently Perry is at -3, while Glover is sitting one stroke behind that at -2.

Will They Finish?

If they go out again, it'll be worth watching.  Hold tight, we'll see what happens!

We all know the rain was a huge drag for anyone and everyone that was involved with the U.S. Open yesterday.  It doesn't matter if you were there trying to play, there trying to get the course READY to play, there trying to Watch play, or even just sitting at home waiting for the golf to really get going, we all missed it.  That said, what was a bum deal for all of those golf fans that actually paid the money and showed up at Bethpage Black to watch Round 1, turned out to be maybe the best deal they've ever gotten today.

If Monday Comes, They'll Be There

That's right, the USGA has gone ahead and done the right thing by giving all of those unlucky spectators that were rained out yesterday, the best deal of their lives by giving them all free tickets to come back and watch the play on Monday.  That's right, from Round 1 to the final Round, I'm fairly sure EVERYONE of them would be extremely happy with the trade-off.  After all, which would you rather attend, round 1 of the U.S. Open or the Final round?!

USGA Sounds Off

When asked how they came to this conclusion, USGA President David Fay said:

"We tried to come up with a solution that's fair...the USGA examined what other sports organizations considered full use of a ticket. For the USTA and the U.S. Open tennis at flushing Meadow, it's 90 minutes, Fay said. At the British Open, it's two hours."

Will There Be Play on Monday?

Considering fans only got to see about 3 hours of golf, and they wouldn't be able to come back Saturday or Sunday due to sell-out crowds already, Monday seemed the only appropriate.  The only drawback could be, what if the golf doesn't go into next week?  In that case, those unlucky fans truly are unlucky and we feel their pain.  Considering how the weather reports are looking, however, they might just find themselves watching some great golf.  Time well tell...

They really know how to torture us, don't they?!  We've been waiting weeks months for the U.S. Open to finally kick off and once it finally does, what happens?  It POURS.  Yes, the heavens have opened up and a torrential downpour has caused play of Round 1 at Bethpage Black to be delayed, and delayed, and delayed even further.  We're still waiting and while there are reports surfacing that they are rushing to get things back on track this afternoon, we'll have to wait and see.

Round 1 Has Leaders at -1

That said, what did we miss?  Round 1 did get off to a bit of a start before the great flood began, how did people play?  Looks like there have been some ups and some downs already at Bethpage Black, considering that play has been suspended since 10:15 Eastern Time.  Currently there are a few golfers sitting in the lead at an early -1, included are Jeff Brehaut, Johan Edfors, Andrew Parr and Ryan Spears.  While no one has finished their round, and Brehaut is only through 11 holes, -1 is still the score to beat.

Where's Tiger?

Tiger Woods, on the other hand, was through 6 holes when the horn sounded and is currently sitting at 1-over-par.  Considering how the weather is looking, I doubt we'll be seeing him try to lower that score anytime soon.  Despite the fact that the rain seems to let up at times, right when it does another downpour occurs and even if it stopped completely, it'd take the USGA quite some time to actually get the course back in playing condition.  Reports are in that some of the greens are completely underwater and some fairways appear to have "rivers running through them."  Yikes.

Play Will Most Likely Be Cancelled

Bottom line, play will most likely be cancelled for the day, which is an extreme bummer for all of us golf fans, but it could make things extremely interesting when play finally does resume.  What will this do to scores?  Time will tell, but we can't wait to find out!
